Deadline announced in June 2022 that Jake Schreier, known for Robot & Frank, will direct a Thunderbolts film, surprising fans. Eric Pearson initially wrote the script, but Beef creator Lee Sung Jin took over in March 2023. The Thunderbolts is a story of villains posing as heroes. The cast will feature Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

Harrison Ford is reprising his role as Ross. Ayo Edebiri and Steven Yeun joined in January 2023, but later departed due to conflicts, replaced by Lewis Pullman and Geraldine Viswanathan.
