RAG here stands for Reveal, Align and Guess. Divide the 6 attempts into 3 parts of the strategy. Use the first 2 attempts to reveal as many letters as you can. Use the next 2 attempts to align as many of the discovered letters in the proper positions. Lastly, make intelligent guesses using your vocabulary knowledge in the last 2 attempts to win the game.
Use clever words in the first 2 attempts
You know that you can’t guess the word in the initial 2 attempts. Hence, your focus should be to reveal as many letters as possible.
A clever word is a word that contains most vowels, my personal favorites are LOUIE, OUIJA and ADIEU, and AUDIO and these are easy to remember. However, there are many others like AUREI, MIAOU, OURIE, URAEI, and IOUEA, etc Use one of these words with 4 vowels as your first word.
It might as well be one that contains the most used letters in the English alphabet. As per the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, the most commonly used letters are
E (11%), A (8.5%), R (7.6%), I (7.5%), O (7.2%), T (6.9%), N (6.6%), S (5.7%), L (5.5%), C (4.5%)
Looking at the above stats, some of the strongest words would be ARISE, ATONE, ANISE, TORAN, ROAST, SLATE etc. Use this structure for the second attempt. Avoid words that contain vowels and consonants that are not present in the word. Also, avoid words that have letters in the same position which has been indicated as the wrong position for that letter. Remember that you don’t want to waste any chances.
Realign letters in the next 2 attempts
Once you have identified at least 3 vowels and/or consonants in the first 2 attempts you should focus on aligning them at the right places. In your third attempt, you should focus on words that place the identified letters in correctly identified places. Such words must not repeat the position for a specific letter that was indicated as an incorrect position. You should use words that have letters, that were placed incorrectly in previous attempts, at new positions.
Make intelligent Guesses
At this stage when you know at least 3 letters that are surely a part of the word and at least 2 of those letters are in the right position, use intelligent guess. Your vocabulary strength will come in handy at this point. If you can think of a word but you are not sure if it really exists formally in the dictionary, don’t hesitate to look it up. There is no shame in using a reference to just check a word.
Don’t be in a rush when you make a guess, it won’t be an intelligent guess if you rush. Before submitting the new word verify that none of the letters are in the wrong positions or indicated as not present in the word.
Don’t shy away from repeating letters
While you are at the last 2 attempts listen to your gut feel. If you feel that a word with repeated letters is the right one then don’t dismiss it just because it has repeated letters. Just be cautious that the repeated letter isn’t coming at a position that was indicated as incorrect for that letters in earlier attempts.
